As anyone lucky enough to live in the 50's will tell you...this was one of America's greatest decades.  Muscially, the standards were still popular but owning cars and gathering at the malt shops would soon add a new dimension to the American muscial landscape. It's a phrase that gets tossed around a lot and usually tongue in cheek...but when you look at the prices of things in the 50's it's hard not to believe it. For example, in 1957:
Gallon of gas: $0.24
A gallon of milk: $1.00
Loaf of bread: $0.19
Postage stamp: $0.03
Ford car: $1,879 - $3,408
Average home: $20,000
Average income: $4,494
